University Dropout Rate Rises

Alex Wright March 09th, 2018

Statistics by the Higher Education Statistics Agency show that, for the third year in a row, the number of students leaving university before second year has increased.

As many as 26,000 students who started uni in 2015 did not stay past year one.
However the drop out rate varies accross institutions.

For example less than 1% of Cambridge students left in their first year. Compare that to London Metropolitan, where 19.5% of students left before reaching year 2.

Nationally the drop out rate was 6.4% in 2015 compared to 5.7% in 2012. Continuing the past 3 year on year rises . This worrying trend adds to the current turmoil in the higher education sector. Currently University staff are taking industrial action against changes to staff pensions. Whilst some students are taking action to be compensated for their loss of teaching hours.
