Universities are coming under scrutiny for their gender pay gap, as students question whether the higher education sector should be setting an example.

Shropshire Harper Adams and York St John are reported to have the worst gender pay gaps in the higher education sector. Calculated by median average salaries, these universities paid men 37.7% higher than women.

However York St John noted a fifth of its staff were paid student ambassadors, three quarters of which were women. Feeling this may have skewed the universities results.

Throughout english universities the average pay gap was 18.4%. In real terms female university staff earn 81.6p for every £1 per hour of their male counter parts.

Of the Russell group universities, The University of Durham and Warwick ranked as having the highest inequality. Durham's gap coming in at 29.3% and Warwick at 23.4%.

Students have been left dissapointed in their universities for not taking a lead on this issue proving a challenge in the future to the higher education sector.
